A CEM 900 first: Rolling over power lines
The CEM 900 riders experienced varying weather conditions, and trail hazards galore on Friday. After downing Jay’s breakfast of bacon, eggs, and blueberry pancakes, Jim and John were on the trails by 9:30 am where they experienced chilly temperatures but moderate winds. However, there were more trees down caused by high overnight winds. The riders made their initial run from the campsite to Houston, a 36 mile trek. There Jay picked them up then dropped them off for a down hill run from Fountain back to the campsite where Jay had lunch waiting.
During the morning run, weather changed from cool and cloudy to warm with sunshine. But on the final run it became cloudy and cold, with more high winds. There were more downed trees and branches littering the trail. At one point the riders spotted a squad car with lights flashing parked on the trail. Nearing it, they unintentionally rode directly over a downed power line hidden among small tree branches! The attending officer had stopped twelve riders coming from one direction but hadn’t looked back to see Jim and John approaching from the other. She was relieved to see that they somehow rolled safely over the wires.
Needless to say, the riders felt lucky to have avoided being shocked, and welcomed the sight of Jay at the grill cooking bbq’d chicken. They had just enough energy to play a new card game before enjoying Jay’s blueberry pie then heading for their bunks.
